PLAZA MUTIS

The square preserves the dimensions of the main squares in Spain. In it stands the Obelisk, which was erected in 1815 to commemorate the 100 years of the sovereign and independent state of Mariquita. The obelisk was built using the last stone remnants from the residence of the conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, in homage to him and the heroines and heroes of Mariquita who fought and died in the separatist war in what is now the Republic of Colombia and Spain. There you will also find the Ceiba (Pentandra), planted in 1988 in honor of the Armeritas and the people of Mariquita who sacrificed their lives in Armero in 1985. Its architecture, colonial style, Republican-style balconies, and a portion are paved in the Spanish style. Later, due to deterioration and poor maintenance, it was divided by a basement and a stage made of slate. Next to it stands the Cathedral of San Sebastián de Mariquita.
