Looking back: Colombia’s growing footprint in independent cinema

News

Compartir en:

In recent years, Colombia has steadily built a reputation as a creative and production-friendly destination for independent cinema. Long before it became a frequent choice for large-scale productions, the country attracted filmmakers driven by strong authorial visions, distinctive landscapes, and collaborative local crews.

A landmark moment came with Memoria, directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, which positioned Colombia on the global indie map and introduced international audiences to the country’s cinematic potential beyond traditional production models. Since then, a new wave of independent and prestige-driven projects has followed.

Among them is The Last Photograph, directed by Zack Snyder and filmed in Colombia as part of a more intimate, auteur-focused phase of the filmmaker’s career. The project highlighted the country’s versatility, skilled crews, and ability to support ambitious creative visions within independent production frameworks.

In recent years, Colombia has welcomed productions like The Luckiest Man in America, directed by Samir Oliveros, and Rosario, directed by Felipe Vargas, further elevating its reputation among international indie filmmakers. Beyond serving as a sought-after shooting location, Colombia has also emerged as a post-production hub, exemplified by Pedro Páramo, directed by Rodrigo Prieto, which completed its post-production locally under the CINA incentive. This evolution highlights the country’s expanding expertise across the entire audiovisual value chain. As Fernando Ferro, producer of 52nd State, observed: “Production value for cost; I think that's one of the most fascinating things about shooting here. We had an independent film budget; a lot of independent films operate in this budget range.”

What draws independent filmmakers to Colombia goes beyond its diverse locations. Short travel distances, competitive costs, experienced crews, and incentive programs such as CINA have created an ecosystem that supports both creative freedom and production efficiency.

Colombia stands out not as a newcomer, but as a territory with a growing track record; a place where independent stories have been shaped, filmed, and brought to life, and where future projects continue to find fertile ground.
